Google Ads and Meta conversion uploads

Send people's conversions back to Google Ads or Meta, so their bidding learns which clicks turned into sign-ups and sales. Set it up in Site settings → Ad conversion uploads. It's off until you connect a platform.

What's captured, and for how long

Connecting a platform turns on capture of its ad click IDs from your landing pages:

Platform Click IDs
Google Ads gclid, gbraid, wbraid
Meta fbclid
  • Click IDs are kept apart from your analytics: not in page views, reports, exports or the API.
  • They're deleted after the number of days you choose, from 1 to 90 (30 by default). Shortening it applies to click IDs already held. Disconnecting deletes them at once.
  • Without a connection, click IDs are only ever recorded as present or not, through URL parameters.
  • Ad click IDs identify an ad click, so where ad tracking needs consent (the EU, UK and Switzerland among others), make sure your consent setup covers them before connecting.

What's sent

Once a day, people's goal conversions (never agents') from sessions that carried a click ID, each sent once:

  • Google Ads: an offline click conversion with the click ID, the conversion action you chose, the time, and the value and currency when the goal is an event with a value.
  • Meta Conversions API: the event name you chose (like Purchase or Lead), the time, an event ID for deduplication, the click ID as fbc, and the value. Punchline never keeps visitors' IP addresses or user agents, so these go with action source "other" and the click ID as the only match key. Meta matches fewer of them than its own pixel would; that's the trade for not keeping them.

No email addresses, phone numbers or other personal data are sent: Punchline doesn't have them.

Connecting Google Ads

You'll need: a Google Ads API developer token; an OAuth client (ID and secret) and a refresh token for a user with access to the account; the 10-digit customer ID; the manager account ID if access is through one; and the ID of a conversion action of type Import → Track conversions from clicks. Punchline checks they work before saving, and stores the secrets encrypted.

Connecting Meta

In Events Manager, open your dataset (pixel) → Settings → Conversions API → Generate access token. Paste the dataset ID and the token, and choose the event name. Add a test event code while you check the setup in Test Events.
